This story came about as the result of a new character I needed for a work-in-progress novel. This character wasn’t meant to be a major player, but by the time I finished writing the first scene, I knew I was in trouble. Ultimately, almost his whole story was removed from the novel, because it had nothing to do with the plot through-line of the novel. His story had its hooks in me, though, and now it is its own thing.
BREATHING SPACE isn’t the first L.A. Story to address bereavement and second chances. It probably won’t be the last, because I can easily imagine finding another fiftysomething (or older!) character whose new love story I want to write about, and (unfortunately) it’s not uncommon for older people to be single because of loss.
This is the first L.A. Story with a protagonist who’s a yoga professional. Not sure where that came from, aside from the fact that my own home practice has been getting more focused (and challenging) over the past year. Yoga has always been one of my top three means of coping, and there’s been a lot going on in my personal life which has called for coping.
Anyway, here you have the love story of Paul Xiao and Kevin Park, two Los Angelenos who discover that they share several profound points of connection. This is a story about trust, tolerance, generosity, and friendship. And also about the fact that life has space for a second chance.
