Giving It Up: a new novel

This book happened the way a lot of mine happen: a couple of side characters from a different book danced onstage and said Write About Us.

Three key things about GIVING IT UP:

  1. It is set 2010-2011 and features a coming-out storyline. One of the MCs, Mark Valance, is an actor playing a straight role. At the time of this story, the most-well-known actor who had come out while playing a straight role, and managed to stay employed, was Neil Patrick Harris.

  2. The other MC, Liam Byrne, is a dermatologist from San Diego who is actively looking for long-term love and possibly marriage. At the time the book is set, that was legal for same-sex couples in only a few places in America.

  3. This book also features found family, blending a family, anxiety, and reinvention.

Mark and Liam are 38 and 42, respectively, when the story begins. Like most of my characters, they’ve established themselves in careers; they’ve also been through one or two significant relationships. This isn’t their last chance to find love, but it’s fair to say a few chances have passed them by (for one reason or another).

Like all of my stories, this book stands alone. You don’t need to read any of the others in order to make sense of it. If you want to read others, however, there are a few links. Mark is a friend of Jade Derecha, and Liam is a friend of Robert Anderson. Jade and Robert are the stars of A LITTLE TURN. None of Liam’s exes appear in the book, but we do meet one of Mark’s: Andy Martin, one of the stars of EXPOSURE.

The majority of GIVING IT UP takes place in Los Angeles, with an excursion to New York City and another to Denali National Park in Alaska.

Adult situations, themes, and language; 70,500 words and a happy ending.
